Pre-Packaged Dairy-free Egg-free Peanut-free Goodness

(Whew... what a title!)

I admit it... I was a big pre-packaged cooker before Witt's allergies hit us. Yes, allergieS. The dairy allergy was obvious and then the egg allergy was confirmed when he ate something with egg in it... I don't remember what it was, but I do remember him scratching terribly about two hours after ingestion. Poor little guy. I have not tried barley again yet as I just haven't had the time to pay close enough attention. So, at least two confirmed allergies... possibly a third.

Now that Witt starting to eat more table food, I must be more careful now than I was before; so, I want to start a log of pre-packaged foods that he has eaten so I can keep a reference. I hope this list will also help others and verify some of the foods that "appear" to be dairy-free egg-free. By appears to be I mean that there are so many milk derivatives that it is sometimes hard to keep them straight. Also, some things have the same labeling, but might not be milk-derived (ie "caramel color" can come from milk or other places - I have to call the manufacturer to find out). It's a very tedious process of reading labels (many, many times) to keep Witt safe.

Some of these might appear obviously dairy-free, but you just never know... we found dairy products in toddler toothpaste!!!

Although I am do a lot more "from scratch" cooking now, here are the prepackaged foods that Witt has already had without reaction (this will be a living list as I will add as we go and is in no particular order):

UPDATE: Dec 2008 - Witt also tested positive to peanuts this year, so this list will also include peanut free foods he has eaten.

For Milk Allergy Mom's list of tried foods: click here.

I Can't Believe It's Vegan also has a huge list of dairy-free egg-free prepackaged foods.

Go Dairy Free has a wonderful list of not dairy free, possibly dairy free, and surprisingly dairy free ingredients.

We just found out this week that the source of Hannah's unexplained sneezing and puffy, dark circled eyes is the shampoo we have been using that just happens to contain milk protein.

Not so pleased with myself after that slip-up.

I've actually found quite a few things my dairy free kid can have that's prepackaged. I love to bake so I make most cookies etc. from scratch but it's nice have packaged things for quick snacks etc. Cinnamon graham crackers are a favorite over here. I'm going to try some of your recipes one of these days thanx for posting them!

In our home we have several food allergies or sensitivities -
Banana, peanut, tree nut, coconut, citrus and dairy. Plus food coloring (red 40, yellow 5 & 6) send my 5 1/2 year old climbing up the walls.

It is indeed a challenge.

yum..ok so i'm jealous...we are gluten, dairy and egg free. (oh my!) also try and not do soy much (which eliminate a lot of butter replacement products) i have about 12 cans of pumpkin and have been googling for gfdfef pumpkin recipes. they all have eggs...but i can tell ya DS gets major dark circle and who knows what it does to the poor kids' brain- just ain't worth it... we basically don't shop the middle aisles...still i like your list. I'm in the middle of coming up w. my own... like your blog very cute.

We've recently started a wheat- and dairy-free diet. I didn't realize how much I relied on processed foods (or pizza, or eating out). It's been a real adjustment. And stressful, I admit. Feeding your kid is kind of close to the heart, even when you're doing a cruddy job of it. Suddenly having to worry about it so much more is emotionally challenging.

I'm glad other people blog about it. It's helpful to read.

so you really did try the mcdonalds french fries? i'm so nervous about cross contamination. what are your thoughts? miles barely gets a drink at fast food places but we are doing it more often now....especially after our week of vacation last week.

I did not notice the fries on the list until the latest comment...You might want to OMIT THEM NOW!!!

I recently found two amazing Dairy, Egg and Peanut free baking mixes that taste incredible. They're by a company called Cherrybrook Kitchen. I made the chocolate chip cookies a week or so ago, and even though I messed up the mix (added too much water) they tasted great. And last night I made the brownies...so fudgy and rich I honestly couldn't believe it. They also make frosting and pancake mix and other stuff, some are gluten free as well. I can't wait to order some (Our local Kroger only carries the brownie and cookie mix). Oh, the link: http://www.cherrybrookkitchen.com

Hello, I just came across your blog! Its great! My son is a year old with dairy, egg and peanut allergies. I was so scared in the beginning that I really restricted his diet, so much so that now I am having a lot of trouble getting him to eat! He just does not eat enough! What can i do?

Just an FYI..the Sara Lee breads used to work great for us too - my oldest, 6, has anaphylaxis to milk. Sara Lee changed thier ingredients and now ALL of thier breads have milk :(

This is an awesome list.... thank you.. my nephew has a milk, egg, and soy allergy (amongst others)... and my sister is always reading labels.. I am going to send her to this website!

My daughter was just diagnosed with milk allergies a few weeks ago, and I am relieved to see a web site that provides lists of foods she CAN have that won't triple my grocery bill. Thank you for offering a guiding light =)

Does anyone know of any brownie recipe or boxed mix that is dairy free and tastes good? I tried to make chocolate banana brownies, but they didn't go over too well.

This tasted best the next day. :)

I found several Duncan Hines cake mixes that only listed wheat as the allergen present. I used the pineapple upside down cake mix and a can of pumpkin to make muffins and they were so good. My egg, milk & peanut allergic twin two year olds thought so too!

I am surprised to see Best Value Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips (Wal*Mart brand) on your list! I never shop at WalMart but now I might have to check it out. I have always used the Enjoy Life brand but it is super expensive!

Guittard makes a real semisweet chocolate chip that is dairy free. They come in a goldish package. They taste great and are very reasonably priced!
